“Y-yes you are,” Maya rasped. “Just...just prom-promise me you’ll get Piper.”

Connie nodded, trying so hard to swallow her tears and be strong for her sister’s last seconds alive. “You...have my word,” she said, trying to sound firm.

Maya smiled, but it quickly faded as she continued to bleed out, and a few moments later, she went limp.

Connie held her and rocked back and forth before throwing her head back and screaming at the top of her lungs.

She didn’t know how long she sat there, but eventually fell back on her ass and breathed heavily, trying to compose herself even as tears still streamed down her face. Anger and grief coursed through her veins, and then a gunshot echoed in the distance.

She sobered, snapping back into the moment, and then more gunshots, then panic fire.

Connie jumped up, grabbing her ammo bag and shotgun before rushing out of the house. When she made it out, chaos was coming from the direction of the courthouse, so she started running. She reached into her bag as she ran, refilling the shotgun.

As she got closer to the courthouse, she realized that the gunshots were coming from one direction, which wasn’t a sign of a firefight. That could only mean one thing.

As she got closer, screams filled the air, putting her more and more on edge. She continued to run along the side street, looking forward in the direction of the courthouse. A couple of civilians screamed and ran away from the north end of town where the barricade was. A few seconds later, a runner sprinted past the street.

“Oh my god,” she breathed to herself, and picked up the pace, keeping her shotgun at the ready. As she approached the clearing into the center of town, a runner came across the side street, spotting her. It turned and let out a growl before sprinting towards her.
